Proper procedure. It is not a recall but an advisory sevice bulletin. No point contactng a customer if nothing is wrong. To make points a dealer could inspect the shocks without prompt when the car is in for service. Not every shock will leak, but every shock is warranted. (within terms of warranty)
I do not agree this is the correct procedure. I do not think you wait untill the wheels fall off to notify the customer there might be a problem. "INFORM" the customer that there might be a problem they need to look for in the future, like oil dripping under the vehicle.
You first need to determine how widespread the problem is. Was it limited to simply one day's production using faulty supplier product or is it a design flaw. Worst thing any company can do is go global with a blanket statement "we don't know what is wrong and even if your item is wrong, but be advised there may be a problem with every unit we have retailed" Sure death in the market.
Now if they knew ahead of time, as Ford did with Pinto gas tanks, and decided to save $28 per vehicle then they should immediately halt production, importation, and deliveries until issue is fixed on all 12,000 plus G8's on the road.
And a failed shock will become very noticable to driver long before it could ever cause a wheel to fall off.
I doubt that a bad shock would cause the wheel to fall off, I didnt intend for you to take it literally. The fact that defective products have been put out there for the uninformed public and have cost some of them their life, wouldnt it just be simpler and the right thing to keep them "INFORMED". Is the bottom line realy worth loosing a lifelong customer? We still LOVE the GGGR8. I am trying to find an O to put after the GT.
If every G8 owner knew of a potential problem with the shocks then they would line up at the door expecting new shocks when there was nothing wrong with what they got. GM wouldnt want to pay to replace all of that when only a few were bad.
