First Oil Change - When exactly?

I picked up my car with 12 miles on it. For the next 600 per the manual's break-in procedure, I babied it (for the most part lol), kept the speed low and didn't do any crazy downshifting.

The manual mentions a possible oil change at 600 miles, but then later in the maintenance section mentions an oil change at least once a year and/or when the oil light comes on.

Which is it? When should I do my first oil change?

I have got a new GT G8 as well, and have the same question (now I have 800 miles)...also what brand and type of oil do you recommend? I have never used Synthetic, but was thinking of making the switch now...should I do synthetic with such few miles or wait a bit, for the seals to break in with conventional oil, etc?

I was thinking of using Mobil 1.

I have a 2009.5 G8 GXP that I assume came with Mobil 1 since it has Mobil 1 on the head of the dip stick. I am getting ready to change oil since I have 4500 miles on the car and I'm going to continue with Mobil 1. I have used it in my other vehicles and I'm very satisfied with it. My question is can I use a K&N oil filter? Is it adaptable to the LS3 engine?

I have a similar issue with my car...
I always like to change the oil (and filter) in my new cars at 1000 - 1500 miles. I use Mobile1. With my new G8 (V-6) I'm actually thinking of changing the Oil/Filter @500 miles because the car was originally delivered to the dealer a little over 1 year ago and it had 160 miles at delivery. ~100 of those miles were dealer to dealer moving but the original oil is over a year old. "They" always say (for oil change intervals) 3000 miles or 6 months which ever comes first, so I'm thinking time is more of a factor then milage in my case.
Any thoughts?
Thx,
Jay

Thx for the feedback...
I was actually thinking to do just an oil change @500 using a good non-synth oil and not change the filter (of course I'll drop the filter to empty it). Then @1500 change the oil and filter to Mobil 1.
This way I'm pretty much through any "Break-In" before I let the Mobil 1 change stay in for 5K miles. I just want to get that year-old oil out and get through "break-in" before going to regular oil change intervals (with Mobil 1). I guess as far as the filter (and oil for that matter) goes, I'm "Cheapping-Out" because the darn filter cost $11.50 at Walmart! I'm still debating the filter replacement @500 miles, don't want to be "penny wise - dollar foolish"! It's just that I can't believe the filter is "spent" after only 500 miles.

Just finished the oil change, boy did it look dirty! Ended up changing the filter as well.
I'll do the second change at 1500 with Mobil 1 and a new filter and let the computer tell me when to change the oil for that point on.

I had mine changed to a syn blend at 1500 miles. It now has 6000 miles. No lights have come on asking for the oil to be changed. At this point I'll change the oil every 5k miles regardless and have the dealer do the oil change. They want me to use an oil additive that increases the life and quality of the oil. Dont know about that but its cheap so I'll go with their recommendation. I've checked the oil and its full and very clean looking right now.

I know it says in the manual to change it when the computer tells you to or once a year but I just don't know if I feel comfortable doing that. I was thinking maybe every 5000 miles a compromise. Any comments on that?

Cool

Most of manufactures says that change car oil once in a year or every 7,500 miles. It is for passenger car and light truck gasoline engines. For diesel engines it should be after 3,000.

I did my first change at about 1500 and went with full synthetic. Goodyear store charged me about $75. Reminder had still not come on at 12,000 so I had it changed again. The shop did not reset the reminder--it came on at 13,500. If that's OK with GM, it OK with me. They designed and built the engine and they hold the warranty.
